On Tuesday 16th January we visited Winchester Cathedral to take part in their Art & Design Day. While we were there we took part in 3 different workshops.
“Illumination” Based on the stunning gold-leaf illuminated handwritten Winchester Bible, we worked with specialist Cathedral Scribes to discover more about the art of Illumination and attempted an illuminated letter of our own.
“The Great West Window” Inspired by the mixed-up Great West Window, we discovered its story, imagined what it would have looked like, then designed and made our own ‘pane’ of acetate glass. These were then collated into a class window.
“Carved in Stone” Working with the talented cathedral stonemasons, we scrutinized cathedral sculpture, designed and made our own mini clay gargoyle, and tried our hand at some masonry skills!
Although it was freezing cold in the Cathedral we all had an enjoyable day and created some lovely work!
