Owls

Monday 29th June 2020

Hello Owls!

We had an eventful week last week with our Sports Day and other fun activities based around the Olympics. I hope those of you who aren't at school got to have your own little sports day. I'd love to hear what you go up to and how the day was celebrated.

In Gold group we designed some T-shirts with an Olympic sport theme. They turned out amazingly and some children even wore them for sports day. We also wrote from the perspective of Usain Bolt in English and watched some of the London 2012 opening ceremony. If you've never seen this have a look on you tube!

I'm really looking forward to our class zoom tomorrow. i thought I'd do a quiz so make sure that you have some paper and a pen handy. Keep up the amazing work on purple mash and my maths. Remember to email me if you need help.

Speak tomorrow

Hi everyone!

I really enjoyed catching up with those of you who are not in school yesterday! It was lovely to see all of your faces and hear what you have been getting up to during lockdown. Hopefully we can arrange another one soon with the whole class.

What have you been doing this week? In Gold Group we have been focusing on Refugee week and learning about the lives of those who have to flee their countries because of a conflict or other risks. I have been very impressed with the discussions that have been taking place in class and the creative work that has followed. There has been lots of art work and making going on! Some children made hexagonal structures to represent the ID tags given to refugees. I will add a photo of some work below.

We also made Father's Day cards today and again, the creative juices were flowing!

I hope the weather gets better next week so that we can get outside smiley

Have a great weekend

Hi Owls!

We have had a lovely week in our 'gold bubble'.

We've tried to get outside as much as possible to enjoy the sunshine. Yesterday, we had a mini olympics and played different games whilst trying to score points for our teams.

The whole school had the theme of 'under the sea' so we have been using the film 'Finding Nemo' to discuss bravery, perseverance and resilience. We wrote poems, made positivity posters and letters. In Maths, we focused on fractions, decimals and percentages.

We have started reading 'Wonder' in class and so far we are really enjoying it.

I hope you are all ok and I miss you very much. I wish we could have the whole of Owls back together.

Here are some photos of our proud wall and the zoom assembly that Ms Bundy did today.

Take care and have a lovely weekend.

Friday 22nd May

Afternoon Owls!

I had a lovely day in school yesterday where we explored the country Italy. Mrs Berry-Green taught us how to count from 1-10 in Italian and we also made factfiles. In the afternoon, it was time to get arty! Have you heard of the artist Amedeo Modigliani? He is a portrait artist who makes peoples' necks extra long. So we had a go at drawing like him with some hilarious results. We made Venetian masks too, which turned out really well!

Your word of the day on Monday was:

impetuous Definition: (adjective) If you describe someone as impetuous, you mean that they are likely to act quickly and suddenly without thinking or being careful.

Your new word is: frivolous

Next week is half term and then some of you will be back in school. I can't wait to see you!

If you aren't coming back, don't worry. We will still be in contact and I will come and see you again before the end of the year smiley

I am very excited for you to see what we have been busy creating for you at school. We hope you like it! It should be sent out to you very soon laugh

Have a lovely half term.

Take care

Monday 18th May

Happy Monday Owls!

How are you all today? I had a lovely weekend. We went for a walk on the beach on Saturday and it was so nice to get some fresh sea air. Then on Sunday, we decided to explore South Wonston and bumped into a lot of you on the field! I never realised how many walks there are, so will definitely be going back soon!

I forgot to give you your new word of the day on Friday.

The word you had was: suffice
Definition: (verb) If you say that something will suffice, you mean it will be
enough to achieve a purpose or to fulfil a need.

Your new word is: impetuous

Well done for continuing to persevere on Purple Mash and My Maths. Lots of you are having a go more than once to try and achieve your best scores.

I'm going to try and do some baking this week. If you manage to get in the kitchen, let me know what you create. I know that some of you have been learning how to cook for your whole family (Mischa) which is fantastic!

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week (18th- 24th May)

Your mental health, as you know, is always extremely important. These unusual times that we are living in, are nothing anybody has ever experienced before and so it is even more important than usual to be kind to your mind. This year the theme is #KindnessMatters

Did you know that kindness can be beneficial for our mental health? Find out more about Mental Health Awareness Week here:

I'd love to know some of the things that you have done for other people and how you've shown kindness.

Also, how have you been kind to yourself, because that is REALLY important too laugh

Have a look at the video below.

Take care

Friday 15th May

Hello everyone!

Well what can I say? Mrs T and I have had the best two days visiting you all. It was so lovely to see you at your houses and be able to see your smiley faces again! Thank you for the effort that you put in to our visit. Some of you had it as a surprise and that was amazing to see too! We are both hoping that the 1st June goes ahead and we get to have you back in class, however that may look. If you decide not to come back, we'd love to pop over and see you again before the end of the year. The last two days were really special and emotional for us. I have also decided that I could never be a delivery driver! laugh

It sounds like you have all been very busy with things as well as your work. Changing light bulbs, putting on a wash, baking, helping on the farm, walking your dogs, settling in new puppies and loads more! It was great to be introduced to so many of your pets. Coco couldn't stop sniffing me when I got home!

I hope that you all have a wonderful weekend and our visit has boosted you as much as it has us!

Take care,

Miss Jones xxx

Monday 11th May

It's Monday!

Today would have been your SATs week. There may have been a few groans but I think (secretly) many of you were looking forward to having a special week, just for Year 6. I'm sorry that this has been taken away from you because of the coronavirus, but I'm so excited to hear that we are potentially getting you all back in June!!

I know that some of you may have concerns about this. Please don't worry and let the adults sort everything out to make it safe! Let's look forward to the time we can spend together before Secondary school laugh

While you are still at home maybe take some time to think about how you can relax. This could be something fun to do with your brothers and sisters or just on your own. I've found some yoga moves that you may want to try and a link to a you tube video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X655B4ISakg&feature=youtu.be

I thought I'd share some work from Purple Mash that really impressed me. Well done Hattie and Max for your fantastic poems about a storm!

Congratulations to Kestrels who won the TTRS battle frown Come on Owls!!! Let's try and win the next one!

Have any of you discovered the 'Top of the Rocks' battles? We have been competing against other schools and it looks like we've done well! We beat Sparsholt but Kings Worthy managed to do better than us. I will set up another one, so keep an eye out!

WOTD:

I'm going to start giving you a word of the day. Your job is to then:

Find a definition,

Use the word in a sentence,
List any synonyms,
List any antonyms,
Use the word in a different context,
Use an image to represent the word - be creative!

Today's word is...essential

Happy VE Day!

How have you spent today? Have you been celebrating with your family or having a socially distanced street party?

I went for a lovely walk today and explored a new area that I haven't been to before. It's been such nice weather, hopefully it'll continue over the weekend.

Did you know that the BBC iplayer are showing different film each week? These are the ones showing at the moment. Maybe you could have a film night?

Wednesday 6th May

Hi Owls!

I hope you are all well? I had a very busy day in school today, we spent some time thinking about VE Day and what it meant to people at the time. We discussed emotions and looked at a range of pictures and poetry. The children then planned and wrote their own poems to celebrate the end of the war in Europe. In the afternoon, we made medals and some bunting using the lego link I gave you on Monday...it looks fab!

Don't forget to keep planning your party and to send me your completed ideas. What kind of plans are there in the village? Are you and your family going to celebrate in anyway?

Have a look at the link below for some free downloads of worksheets from CGP, which is the company that we buy the revision guides from. There is English, Maths, Science, Geography and History to choose from.

Have any of you been listening to music during the lockdown? I've been going through all of my old CDs and finding them on spotify or you tube. It's been really fun to find 'old' music which I'd forgotten about. What have been your favourite songs to listen to? Why don't you ask your adults which music they used to like when they were your age? You could even ask your grandparents over facetime or zoom.

Until Friday...laugh

Monday 4th May

Hello!

How are you all getting on? I hope that you have enjoyed doing the work online and are looking at the feedback I am giving you. You are not expected to do it all at once, so use your time to choose one or two tasks and make sure they are done to a high standard. I'd much rather that than they be rushed smiley Not that any of you EVER rush your work wink

Have you managed to think about VE Day and the 75th anniversary yet? I have been looking online and found some useful websites, banner templates, lego characters and a quiz that you can use this week to help find out as much as you can. Are any of you planning a VE Day party? Remember the challenge I gave you on Friday - let me know how you get on using a budget. Here are the websites that I have gathered for you:

I will also attach some comprehension questions that you could do once you have listened to Moonlocket's prologue and chapter 1. See if you can spot who makes a special appearance at the end of the video (sorry I had to record it in two parts as I ran out of storage on my ipad!)

Have a great couple of days.

See you on Wednesday!

Friday 1st May: Happy May Day!!

Hi Owls!

We have been very busy in school today learning about May Day. The children also made paper baskets and filled them with rice crispy cakes laugh

Did any of you spend the day in your pyjamas and read stories? I'd love to know if you have discovered any new authors or series of books since we have been at home. I'm going to record my second installment of Moonlocket today, so look out for that!

Soon, we will be celebrating VE Day 75, in memory of the end of WW2. I wold love for you to research this and make a project about the celebration of this momentous occasion. How could you celebrate it in a safe way?

Could you plan a VE Day party? You've got a budget of £500 to use for your event. What would you include? Use safe websites to help you and let me know what you decide!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hello Owls!

I've finally finished my book character potato! I decided to create Malkin from the Cogheart/Moonlocket books.

Did you manage to do one? I've heard from a couple of you but would love to see your finished characters.

I've been really impressed with the effort you are putting into the online learning. Some of you have managed to boost your totals on my maths by persevering and watching the lesson for a second time. This is excellent and I have been very proud to see this.

I've made a quiz for you to complete on purple mash, see how many you can get right!

It's been lovely to hear that lots of you are cooking and baking for your family. I'm sure you're using a lot of skills to do this, even maths! wink Let me know what you have made.

Charlie sent me a fantastic poem about the importance of smiling. Have a read and see if it brings a smile to your face like it did mine! laugh

Mrs Rowe has found something really fun to do on Friday 1st May...

Pyjamarama: Friday 1 May

To celebrate the bedtime story and reading together, this year's Pyjamarama will be a day when families across the country can join in a festival of story-filled fun at home.

There'll be loads of activities and events for you to take part in – the only requirement is that they're done in pyjamas!

The link below allows you to sign up for information:

This link is for downloadable activities:

Take part and have fun sharing lots of stories in a comfy pair of pyjamas!

Charlie’s poem:

Smiling is infectious,

you catch it like the flu,

When someone smiled at me today,

I started smiling too.

I passed around the corner

and someone saw my grin.

When he smiled I realized

I'd passed it on to him.

I thought about that smile,

then I realized its worth.

A single smile, just like mine

could travel round the earth.

So, if you feel a smile begin,

don't leave it undetected.

Let's start an epidemic quick,

and get the world infected!

Monday 27th April

Hi everyone!

I hope you had a great weekend and enjoyed our lovely weather. I went for two walks and was exhausted by the end of them...as was Coco!

Lots of you are accessing my maths, which is great to see. There’s a range of tasks on purple mash for you to complete but look at the due dates and take your time. I’d rather you did not so many with accuracy than lots with mistakes!

Use the reading books on there too as they are really good.

How many of you have managed to watch my story online? I’m looking forward to doing another upload this week.

I have seen that John Lewis are asking for children to design a super bear for their Christmas campaign. It’s a while until Christmas, but wouldn’t it be great to win the prize and have your teddy sold in their stores?I’ll link it here and attach the template document below:

 https://www.johnlewis.com/content/your-partners-through-it-all/feel-good-friday

I’ve also found a home maths sheet. Have a look and see how many you can complete in your house, garden or on your daily walk.

Keep up the good work at home and try to email me if you can!

Speak soon,

Miss Jones xxx

Friday 24th April

Hi Owls,

How are you all today?

I have recorded myself reading you the next book in Peter Bunzl's series: 'Moonlocket'. Hopefully it should be uploaded soon and you can all enjoy the story with me. As we enjoyed 'Cogheart' so much, I thought it would be a good opportunity to share book two. Before you listen to me read, could you think about the following questions?

 - What predictions do you have about the title of the story?

- If you can access the internet or have the book at home, can you pick out three things that you notice on the front cover? Are there any links to his first book?

I will be finishing my book character potato this weekend and will share it with you on Monday.

I'm looking forward to investigating some new walks around my area. I am very lucky to be near woodland and have a lot of choice right on my doorstep. Where have you been on your walks?

Thank you to all of you who have responded to my maths emoji challenge on purple mash. It would be lovely to hear from all of you next week.

Have a relaxing weekend!

Miss Jones

Wednesday 22nd April

Happy Wednesday everyone!

I've really enjoyed looking through your work on Purple Mash. Some of you have been making up quizzes for me to solve, making a birthday cards for the Queen's 94th birthday and having a play on 2code. I've also been reading your emails everyday and am loving hearing about what you have been up to.

Don't forget about MyMaths to use at home too. Not everyone has logged on yet, so try to do that this week. If there is something in particular that you found tricky then let me know and I can try to explain it to you or give you guidance!

I thought it would be fun to do something arty! Your challenge is to create a book character out of a potato. I will have a go at doing this too. There are a few ideas below to give you some inspiration. To show me your finished characters, take a photo and attach it to your email or instead, ask an adult to send it as a message on our Year 6 Instagram page smiley

Today is Earth Day, have any of you done anything to mark this? Apparently there have been amazing shooting stars in the sky this week. I've not managed to see them yet, have you?

Perhaps you could look at what Earth Day represents. I've been enjoying the daily Google doodles - today's is a bee game!

Keep up all of the hard work and remember to take the time to enjoy being with your families.

Hi Owls!

I hope that you have all had a wonderful Easter and enjoyed having lots of treats!

I've been looking forward to my daily walk and getting out in the fresh air.

We now have My Maths for you to log into and have a go at the weekly activities that have been set. Remember to use resources to help solve the problems and think about those strategies that we use in class.

What is the question asking you and what do you know?

There will also continue to be 2do tasks on Purple Mash and we can keep in contact by email.

Which TTRS battle would you like to have next?  Let me know and I can set it up for you smiley

I took part in two quizzes over the Easter holidays and they were really fun. Have you had any family quizzes?

I'm going to start mentioning pieces of work that stand out or which I feel have taken a lot of effort, so remember to keep up the good work and do your best - whatever task you have been set.

This is a great opportunity for you to develop your independence ready for secondary school.

See you on Wednesday!

Miss Jones xx

Friday 3rd April

Afternoon Owls!

I’ve had a lovely day in school today. We started with Joe Wicks, then made PIZZAS!!

I’ll add a copy of the recipe as it was so easy to make and really tasty!

Then we enjoyed some sunshine and played with the outdoor equipment. After lunch it was movie time, where we watched the new Lady and the the Tramp - obviously I loved it as you know how I adore my Disney 😍

So, now it’s time for you to have a break from all of your home learning and enjoy the Easter holidays. You are not expected to do work in this time. I think some activities are going to be sent to your parents and I’m going to give you some ideas too!

1. Watch a film related to Easter or with animals we associate with Easter e.g Hop

2. Make your postal worker or a different key worker an Easter card. I left some mini eggs out for my post lady and she loved them!

3. Do some baking: I love crispy cakes, which can be simple to make.

4. Plant some seeds or help in the garden.

5. Make a sock bunny (just make sure they’re clean boys! 😬)

6. Do an Easter hunt! This doesn’t have to involve chocolate, it could be a puzzle or a quiz to solve.

But HAVE FUN!

I’m still missing you all like mad. I walked into my empty classroom today and missed the sounds of your (loud) voices! I never thought I’d stay that. πŸ˜±πŸ˜ƒ

Have a great Easter!! 🐣

Miss Jones xx

Wednesday 1st April

Wow, I can't believe it's April already!

What have you been doing the last few days? Did any of you manage to complete any of the activities that I suggested?

Maybe you could make up a dance to your favourite song or make up a new version/rap?

I've had a go at making you a quiz to complete on Purple Mash and set it as a to-do. See what you think and if you like it I can make some more.

I'm sure that you have all been colouring and making lots of rainbows for people to spot on their walks. I have seen that the new hospital that is being built in London: 'The Nightingale', has asked for children's rainbow drawings so that they can share them with staff.

Either scan them in or take a photo, sharing them with the #RainbowsForNightingale so that they can be shared with staff digitally.

I have found some colouring sheets that you can do for the key workers who are all still doing an amazing job too.

I hope that you are still managing to keep in contact with your friends and family, either through facetime, email or texting.

I had a bit of a blast from the past last night and had a go at Super Mario on the super nintendo console (ask your parents!) I can't say I was that good but it definitely passed a couple of hours and took me back to when I was your age!

I'll be back on Friday. Until then, take care everyone.

Miss Jones

Monday 30th March

Happy Monday Owls!

I hope that you had great weekends and enjoyed most of the weather, although it was definitely a bit windy at times!

Well done for logging into Purple Mash and completing your to-dos. Have you explored Classroom Secrets Kids yet? Also, have a go at hit the button if you get a chance. Why not challenge your brothers and sisters (or parents?!)

I have found an activity sheet, which I will upload for you. It's a chance for you to get a bit creative with music, cooking and art. You could even make it Easter themed?

Let me know what you get up to through Purple Mash email, I'd love to see and hear about your ideas!

Hopefully it'll get a bit warmer so we can enjoy our gardens or daily exercise. I enjoyed baking some banana bread and rock cakes over the weekend. I know that Mrs Drury has been busy knitting some hats for newborn babies, who are in hospital. Can any of you knit?

Hello Owls!

I hope that you are all finding lots to do and are starting to get into a routine at home. I’m sure many of you have got a timetable with a variety of activities on, what kind of things have you been doing?

Did you see that Chester Zoo were streaming live today? I tried to see the animals but I think the website was a bit busy!!

Yesterday, Mrs T and I were in school with the children of key workers. We set them a challenge to make a shoe out of paper. There were all sorts of designs and it was quite impressive. Obviously I helped some Year Rs make princess shoes! πŸ‘ΈπŸ» What shoe would you have made?

Hopefully you have been checking your purple mash to do tasks? I have been replying to your work and emails every day and it’s been great to see you all working hard.

Well done for winning the TTRS battle against Year 5! We smashed it!

Hopefully it’ll stay sunny over the next few days. Coco has enjoyed another long walk today and is now snoring on my lap πŸ˜ŠπŸΆπŸ’€

I saw something fun for us to try in our houses; it’s a climb mountains challenge using the stairs in your house (remember to be safe!)

I’ll post a photo of it for you to see.

I hope that your parents are enjoying the Instagram account and it’s giving them some ideas for how to keep you all occupied.

Maybe you could tidy your rooms over the weekend to keep your parents happy πŸ€”

Hi Owls!

I’m very much missing you all and look forward to your messages on purple mash.
This is a big change for us all and staying safe is the main priority right now.
Luckily there is SO much that you can do at home (in fact, I can’t keep up with all of the resources that are out there) and you can enjoy a variety of tasks online.

Lots of your favourite authors are reading their books every day through their websites, these are worth checking out.

Get outside and enjoy the weather, play in your gardens, explore nature and have time with your families.

You could do some baking, keep a diary and play with your pets 🐢
I thought it would be fun to give you some emoji book Pictionary games to solve.

Have a go and let me know how you get on!

We have been at school today and have tried to get as much fresh air as possible with the children who are in.

We've also made rainbows to put on the windows.

We hope that you enjoying being at home with your families and you have been well behaved smiley

Don't forget to keep in touch through purple mash and we will keep in contact on Instagram too.

Remember to try Joe Wicks' daily workout on You Tube...
