Mental Health and Wellbeing
At South Wonston Primary School, we are committed to doing all we can to support the mental health and wellbeing of our children, families, and staff.
We strive to ensure that all our pupils:
- Develop a strong sense of self-confidence
- Build the emotional intelligence to express themselves effectively
- Foster healthy, collaborative relationships with their peers
- Acquire the coping mechanisms necessary for everyday life
- Demonstrate resilience and adaptability in the face of change
- Sustain a high level of academic and personal achievement
Within school, children are encouraged to share any worries or concerns. They can use the worry box located in the KS2 corridor to request support from a member of the pastoral team, or speak to a trusted adult in their classroom.
Our pastoral team provides targeted support for pupils through both one-to-one sessions and small group work, ensuring that individual needs are met.
We also use the myHappymind programme across the school, from Nursery to Year 6, to help children understand their emotions, develop self-regulation skills, and build positive mental health habits. You can find out here about myHappymind here.
Our Team
Our Designated Mental Health Lead is Miss Cooper. Our Pastoral Lead is Mrs Donovan, who is also our trained ELSA (Emotional Literacy Support Assistant). Mrs Knight supports our Pastoral team and is our trained TALA (Therapeutic Active Listening Assistant).
While we are not mental health professionals, we are able to support children within school and, where appropriate, signpost families to additional services.
If you have any concerns about your child’s mental health and wellbeing, we encourage you to speak with us. Alongside the support we offer in school, there are a number of external agencies that can provide further guidance and specialist support.
